Abstract

Population aging is a global phenomenon. In Brazil, the elderly population that was about 14 million in the year 2000 passed to approximately 24 million in 2014. This sudden change in the Brazilian population pyramid brought challenges in the social, cultural, leisure and health spheres. This work, built in line with the trend of expansion of the scope of action of Occupational Therapy had the objective of analyzing the accessibility in the Museum of Geodiversity of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro with regard to the elderly. The qualitative study included the description of the visit of a group of socially vulnerable elderly people to the museum and the analysis of the experience based on the conversation with the elderly, museum mediator team and occupational therapy students involved in the activity. It was noted that occupational therapists have to contribute to the accessibility of the museum in order to better accommodate the elderly. This contribution was based on three main aspects: adaptation of the museum's environment, orientation to the mediators team and interventions with the elderly at the time of the visit.
