  • In a separate document, the author must include the following information: main author and co-authors, brief bio (highest academic degree, institutional affiliation, and institutional e-mail), last two publications, and ORCID number.

Author Guidelines

Guidelines for Authors

  1. Comunicación y Medios invites professionals, academics, students, and activists of communication, media studies, journalism, audiovisual production, culture, and related fields to submit articles and reviews in their areas of expertise.
  2. Comunicación y Medios only receives original and unpublished articles written in Spanish or English. The journal does not accept previously published material or articles under review elsewhere at the time of submission.
  3. The maximum number of authors per articles is three. If necessary, the rest of the collaborators will be mentioned in a note.
  4. All manuscripts must be submitted through the Open Journal Systems (OJS) software, available here. In order to complete the submission, authors must fill out the requested information. Articles sent through other means will not be reviewed.
  5. Articles must be sent in Microsoft Word, 11 pt. single-spaced, Arial. The extension should range from 5,500 to 7,000 words (including references, tables, images, graphs, appendices, and notes). The title should not exceed 15 words; the abstract should have no more than 200 words, and include a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 5 key words. The title, abstract, and key words must be included in Spanish and English. The journal will not review submissions that do not comply with these requirements.
  6. The article abstract must contain the following elements: issue, theoretical framework, methodology, and primary results.
  7. The structure and style of each article will be reviewed and evaluated on its merit. We recognize that the field of communication studies comprises different writing and stylistic strategies. However, the manuscript must be clearly organized. We suggest a structure that includes “Introduction, Theoretical Framework, Methodological Framework, Results, Conclusions, Notes, and References” or “Introduction, Methodology, Results, Discussion, Notes, and References.” The structure may vary in the case of theoretical articles. All references must be included in the same section (bibliography, documents, news articles, or audiovisual material, among others). DOIs must be included when available.
  8. Notes must be included at the end of the article.
  9. In order to ensure a double-blind peer review, submitted documents must be anonymous. Please delete any indication of authorship, both from the file’s content and properties.
  10. Reviews must have a maximum extension of 1,500 words. They must be unpublished texts and address books or films that are recent (no more than two years old) and relevant for the journal’s area of interest. Include the bibliographic information for the reviewed material, whether book, movie, documentary, or other (author, title, city, press or producer, year, and number of pages or runtime). Attach the image of the reviewed book (jpg or png format, minimum resolution of 250 dpi).
  11. In a separate document, the author must include the following information: main author, co-authors, brief bio (highest academic degree, institutional affiliation, and institutional e-mail), last two publications, and ORCID number. In this document, authors may also include acknowledgements to people or institutions that have financed the investigation.
  12. For accepted manuscripts, the editors of Comunicación y Medios reserve the rights to make any style corrections deemed necessary.

Regarding the Body of the Text:

The title should be written in 18 pt. Arial, bold, with lowercase letters (the initial letter capitalized) and without a period.

  1. Texts should be written in 11 pt. Arial, with both left and right margins justified, single spaced for the body text, references, and notes. Only MS Word files are accepted.
  2. Subtitles should be subsequently enumerated. For example: 1. Bold lowercase letters; 1.1 Bold lowercase letters; 1.1.1 Italicized lowercase letters. Do not indent subtitles or use periods.
  3. Italics must only be used for titles of print publications (names of newspapers, for example), audiovisual productions (titles of documentaries, for example), and foreign words (responsibilidad, for example). We suggest not abusing technical resources such as italics, scare quotes, or notes.
  4. Number the pages in the lower right-hand corner.
  5. Images and illustrations must have a minimum resolution of 250 dpi. They must be included in the main document and also sent in separate files. They must be numbered corresponding to their content (Graph no.; Table no.; Figure no., etc.). The source of each image, table, or graph must be properly identified. Each one of these files must be named according to the kind of image or illustration and its corresponding number in the article (for example, Graph01; Photograph01, etc.). The main file should indicate where each image or illustration should be inserted, according to the numbering.
  6. In the case of graphs or other data visualization, please send the original file from which the resources were extracted (spreadsheet or others).

References:

  1. All articles must adhere to the latest version of the American Psychological Association (APA).
  2. All references must be included in one section at the end of the article, regardless of their nature (book, journal article, work document, newspaper article, audiovisual material, or web page) and they must be organized alphabetically. When available, a DOI should be included.
  3. Only include references for material that is cited, paraphrased, or mentioned in the text.

Comunicación y Medios will reject manuscripts that fail to comply with these established requisites.
