Abstract

A study was carried out using 152 native chilean horses in competition, during the Official Competence of Rodeo of Parral (VII region), Chillan, Pinto, San Ignacio, San Carlos (VIII region) in order to determine and analyse its hipometric characteristics as height at withers heart girt body length, age and body weight. At the same time the horseman, implements and saddle were weighed in order to determine the real weight and estimated load capacity during walking and running.

The results obtained indicate that the chilean criollo horses had values for height at withers, heart girt and body length similar to those established in the standard for the breed in the official records of the Chilean Association of breeders of Chilean native Horses.

The 49.3% of horses showed a metacarpus perimeter higher than those established by the International Federation of breeders of American native Horses. The hipometric characteristics define the chilean native horses as a midline, low height, with a wide torax and short of body length.

The total load transported by the horses during the rodeo was 92.9 ± 10 kg, value which represent the 24% of their body weight (392.1 ± 33.8 kg), where the body weight of the horseman was the principal factor of variation of the total load. The relationship between the total load transported and the estimated load capacity in velocity determined that during the rodeo competence the total load transported by the horses was higher than the estimated load capacity in speed. These results show that during the rodeo the chilean horse is subjected to an effort higher than its estimated work capacity.
