Abstract

The study group consisted of 20 horses, with no sex distinction, between five and 10 years of age, without clinical signs of lameness, or acute of cronic tendinitis at the inspection and the clinical palpation. All horses were ultrasonographically examined in the left and right hand. The metacarpus was divided into three zones of equal area. The examination consisted of transverse (axial) and longitudinal scans. In the first and second zone of the metacarpus the superficial digital flexor tendon (SDF), deep digital flexor tendon (DDF), accesory ligament of the deep digital flexor tendon (CL) and suspensory ligament (SL) were examined. The measure from palmar to dorsal and medial to lateral was made in mm, and the cross sectional area in mm 2.    The largest structure of the first zone of the metacarpus was the DDF, in the palmar to dorsal and the medial to lateral view (p < 0.05). The SDF was the second structure in size in the first zone of the metacarpus in the medial to lateral view (p < 0.05). The CL and the SL and the SL decrease in size from the firts to the second zone the metacarpus, this decrease had a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) for the SL in the medial to lateral view, and the CL in the cross sectional area. In none of the three zones of the metacarpus, neither in the views studied, it could be found statistically significant differences between the right and the left hand (p > 0.05). The cualitative qualification of the ecogenecity of the structures, showed the most ecogenic structure was the CL followed by the DDF and the SDF. The SL was the less ecogenic structure.
