Abstract

In order to determine the environmental conditions of artificial rearing systems.for calves, ten dairy farms were visited ten times each between april and july of 1988. In each visit the temperature (Tº), air humidity (Hº), air speed (As) and amount of light (AL) inside the housing buildings, were measured. The farms were divided into two groups according to the time of the day they were visited; group 1 (G 1, n=5) between 8 and 11 h and group 2 (G 2, n=5) between 11 to 13 h.

The range values of T°, H°, AS, and AL for G 1 tivere –2 to 14°C, 64 to 100%, 0.1 to 1.1. m/s and 8.9 to 750 lux, respectively. In G 2these ranges were 1 to l7'C, 80 to 99%, 0.13 to 1.0 m/s, and 6.67 to 1,500 lux, respectively. The general rate of calf mortality for the period of this study was 4.4% (O to 11%). It was concluded that although the environmental conditions do not meet those suggested by the international literature, these do not affected the yate of calf mortalitv.

Key words: environmental conditions, housing, dairy farms, calves.
ER -
