Abstract

A feeding management trial with growing lambs was carried out during the spring season in an Experimental Station of INIA at the VI Region of Chile. The objectives were to study three different feeding systems for lambs born late in the season, one of which was the classic system in which the lamb remains with his dam on range up to the age of 4 months; a second system consisted in early weaning at 8 weeks of age and fattening on cultivated pastures for 2 months, and the third system was an early weaning at 8 weeks followed by an intensive indoors fattening with a complete diet.

Fifty, 8 week old German Merino lambs were divided ramdomly into 5 groups. Groups I, II and III were housed on individual pens where they received 'ad libitum' pelleted diets consisting of 100% alfalfa; 50% alfalfa and 50% wheat middlings and 25 % alfalfa and 75% wheat middlings, respectively. Group IV, was left on pasture and group V remained unweaned on range. Daily feed consumption (DFC), average daily gain (ADG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were determined in groups, I, II and III, whereas only ADG was measured in groups IV and V. Botanical composition and forage availability was measured at the beginning and at the end of the experiment in both, range and cultivated pasture.

ADG were 0.25, 0.21, 0.18, 0.13 and 0.12 kglday for groups I to V, respectively. DFC (dry basis) were 1.40, 1.26 and 1.13 kg/day for groups I to III respectively and FCR for the last three groups were 6.22, 6.06 and 6.49 kg dry matterlkg weight gain. The intensive indoor system proved to be an effective way to fatten lambs, being diets with an intermediate level of concentrated or high roughage diets more effective than high concentrare diets.
ER -
